Perhaps the only white-tie event of CMJ; at the DFA showcase Thursday night, Yacht was an imperial hunter in the black heart of Brooklyn.
Jona Bechtolt, in white tuxedo pants, shirt, and suspenders was the formal master of ceremonies conducting with Claire L. Evans (whose fabulous black dress singularly conquered and redefined the word "slinky") as queer computer sounds wiggled from speaker stacks into the ears and cortexes of 1,000 worshipers against a digital backdrop that strobed with black and white geometric shapes.
The two, alone on stage with no equipment (no need) save for the screen and two white microphones, strutted and crooned with the elegant savoir faire of Hepburn, Tracy, Gainsborough, Bordot, Taco.
"Think about stupid fucking parents," commanded Bechtolt. "Think about your fucking job. Think about this shitty band!"
Evans wrapped the white cord of her white microphone around her delicate white neck and pulled. Her head, limp.
The speakers summoned a fussy bassline as man and woman jerked in synchronized dichotomy, the erotic gestures of some wonderful, dark, ritual. When the show was over, Bechtolt and Evans disappeared behind a digital projection of their own faces scored with black pixels.
