The first thought when listening to Dragons of Zynth’s “No Keep Asunder (demo)” is “Why does this sound so crappy?” The recording quality is hard to bear, but the song “No Keep Asunder” isn’t quite as bad as the distorted blasts of kick drum and cheesy keyboard might first seem, although the groove almost completely falls apart as the song wears on. The melody is decent and some interesting rhythmic stuff happens, but overall the song just sounds like band practice.
“Anne Mae,” which surprisingly isn’t the first song their myspace, sounds much more presentable, as the simple melody incorporates delicate harmonies over layers of ambient screeching and trashcan drums. The song sounds more complete because it has a personality, a sound, something unique that comes out of the various layers. From the crooning falsetto to fuzzy guitars and female vocal doubling, this song sounds well balanced, unlike “No Keep Asunder” which sounds nowhere near ready for recording.
“>>>>” is a repetitious Garageband beat, with bass noodling, that adds nothing to the band’s appeal. “Rockin Star” at least has a melody, interesting backgrounds, and the song goes somewhere — into a noisy, symphonic sea of metallic tones and whispered singing. It’s hard to believe that “Anne Mae” and “Rockin Star” are the best representatives of Dragons of Zynth. They have some interesting songs, but with some definite throwaways Dragons of Zynth sounds incomplete.
