    Ava Luna

    Rating: 7.5/11

Did you hear the new Franz Ferdinand and Nine Inch Nails project, in which they remix vocal swing-jazz from the 1940’s? Oh, sorry, that didn’t happen, but the closest thing to it did: Ava Luna. This eclectic outfit consists of four vocalists and only two instruments, creating a unique style that is both dynamic and playful. It’s really is difficult to tell that all of the melodies and rhythms are coming from just two people -- drummer Alex Smith and keyboardist Nathan Tompkins – as most of the time, it sounds like a full band playing. Carlos Hernandez, soulful and a little spastic, usually covers the main vocals with a trio of haunting, jazzy females backing him, except in the appropriately titled “Girlies,” an epic track in which the females take center stage. The three songs on their Myspace page leave the listener in great anticipation to hear the rest of the album, scheduled for an August 18th release.
