    Why-G

    By: Joseph VanBuren
    Rating: 7/11

Mostly known as an event host, motivating crowds for various underground hip hop shows in New York, Why-G is determined to prove that he holds his own weight as an artist. His career in music began around the same time his violent lifestyle almost ended it all for him; in 2004, Why-G was stabbed several times during an attempted robbery. It was on a Jamaica, Queens hospital bed that he faced his inner demons and claims to have had a spiritual experience. Now he refers to himself as “The Most High’s musical instrument,” on a mission to make a difference in his community through music, and determination definitely shines through on his tracks. Why-G’s lyrics are skillfully structured, come with positive messages, and delivered with a diversity of styles. From the low-key flow of “Let It Go” to the double-time rhyme of “Won’t Give Up,” his verses are always on point, though his voice tends to become a bit awkward during his hooks -- storytelling, rather than singing, is his strong point. Not overly-produced and digitally destroyed, his beats are raw and reminiscent of old Wu Tang Clan. The guitar sample and upbeat groove of “Got Em” demands the nodding of listeners’ heads. Why-G’s story is one of an artist who has come a long way, yet still has much work ahead of him, and he portrays dedication to progression for his music and his community.
