If there is such a thing as an adult lullaby, The Secret Life of Sofia are writing the book on how it’s properly done. The group is putting out some seriously beautiful melodies that exemplify what would happen if Xanex came in a sound byte. The real backbone of their music, though, is lead singer Kyle Wilson’s voice, which is sultry, strong and calming all at the same time. What the band lacks is an edge that separates them from bands like Iron & Wine, who did what these guys are trying to do years ago and more effectively. There is some texture to their music, mostly the result of their vocal harmonies, but it’s not heard enough and the tracks wind up being hit or miss. Some songs like “Moose Collision” show the band’s layers and potential, while others like “Pale Ramon” don’t impress at all. Lullabies are nice, but you don’t want to put your listeners to sleep all the time. Lull them, yes, but give them a punch while you’re at it. The Secret Life of Sofia just needs a stronger punch. A solid introductory effort but hopefully they can find a way to up the intensity without compromising their mellow nature, which seems to come so organically.
