    Air Waves

    By: Rei Thompson
    Rating: 5/11

Brooklynites through and through, Air Waves take on the lofty sound of the new-age folk tradition, but miss the mark slightly. The lyrics ring clear, almost appearing to be spoken as opposed to sung, but while this style of performance can work with a decent backing of instrumentation, something seems absent in this attempt; the minimalist approach to folk doesn’t bode well, unfortunately. Presentation aside, the lyrics of “Shine On” flit from verse to verse with a sunny-sounding narrator making her last goodbyes to a friend who has passed away. Thus, the saving grace of this band is its fanciful songwriting which makes the listening experience much more active and cerebral.
