Queens’ emcee Gab Gacha (Gabriel J. Velasquez) feels much pride for his native borough, and his declarative word flow presents a view of the area from someone who is constantly absorbing, learning, and reflecting. Having enjoyed some success with a handful of singles years ago, he then spent a long while in prison, emerging with a renewed vision for his music and the lessons he wanted it to convey. Gab Gacha raps swiftly over simple, catchy beats and sample-laden choruses about his block, his pride, and the reality of life in prison, the result being not someone who is self-aggrandizing but is remarkably self-assured and aware of music’s ability to teach and empower. “Judgment Day” reflects this motivation for a positive message, declaring “I choose my words wisely when I speak to the children” over ballady piano chords and a pleasantly humming voice in the background. “Rediscover” places a chipmunk vocal chorus over 50’s radio show harmonies, discussing rap history, passion for his chosen art form, and intentions to penetrate the scene. Gab Gacha’s head-boppin’ beats and pop sensibilities are pleasing when they stand alone, but his strong dedication to positive influence through music helps the tracks really resonate.
