    Hologram

    Your Name: Rei Thompson
    Rating: 6/11

Caroline Ryan, the sole member of Hologram, has developed a simple but compelling musical style sounding most like a high-pitched take on indie folk. Two of her songs, “Goodnight Pt. 1” and “Team,” feature scratchy vocals where Ryan emphasizes the broken vibrato more than the lyrics. Reminiscent of Kimya Dawson, Ryan dances through her songs with a slightly off-key tone that somehow works perfectly. Her often syncopated, upbeat guitar riffs pleasantly back up her vocals, while the off-kilter timber of the drums provides intense rhythmic breaks throughout the songs. Track “Summer Swell” takes on a pop-anthem vibe, hearkening Jefferson Airplane yet keeping an edge, a much different feel from her other more folky tunes. Ryan’s spot in the musical spectrum cannot easily be placed, but this only adds to the appeal of her work.
