    Fatty Acid

    Rating: 8/11

Ever get tired of those vocals bands always have flowing through their music? Then listen to Fatty Acid. With the exception of “It Can’t Slow Down If it Runs,” where the vocals are more an addition of sound than anything lyrically focused, this music is ambient electronica – and it doesn’t stray from the path of instrumental ingenuity.

Their self-titled debut album, featuring creative and unique tracks, dropped just recently on March 9, 2009. The official Fatty Acid website says, “None of the songs off Fatty Acid were composed before they were recorded, but rather assembled by putting down lines upon lines of different instruments and effects.” The music sounds like a dreamy soundscape with twinkling synth beats. “Sunday Morning” features synthesizers that distinctly resemble birds chirping on, say, a Sunday morning, while the synths on song “Evolution” are more piercing, like something from a spacey video game. Since the songs are improvised, it’s no wonder the structure seems totally random, but Fatty Acid isn’t just random noise. The band stacks layer upon layer of sound to create a sonic environment that is in utter harmony. Just listen to “Fast Break,” a pretty jam with quick drums but lazy electric guitar swimming in and out. The music sounds like reading Finnegan’s Wake: beautifully nonsensical and dreamy, but if read right you’ll find the story within the gibberish.
