    Benji Cossa

    By: Stephanie Konarski
    Rating: 7/11

At first listen, Benji Cossa sounds like the easy listening station. However, upon closer examination, Benji creates instrumentally complex yet breezy music. 1960’s folk with slide guitar streams through bouncy beats with a twanging banjo. The songs are well structured, poppy enough to be accessible yet not overtly hook-laden. There are flowing dips and highs that are instrumentally and vocally appealing, while Benji’s voice is on the fringe of falsetto. Trumpets and saxophone also add a jazz feel to the music. “April” sounds like a folky surf rock tune, reminiscent of a cross between The Beach Boys and The Beatles (think “Here Comes The Sun”) with a jazz and country-blues feel. Benji creates happy melodies that can bring out the sun to melt the snow on any cold day.
