Weight of Wandering by Deadbeat Darling

    By: John Mabery
    Rating: 4/11

Deadbeat Darling is a band that either can’t be bothered to show off their range, or has no range at all.  If they did, their album Weight of Wandering (2009) would be more than 50 minutes of background music, but this band has little to no interest in making a lasting impression on the listener.

Not that the music on Wandering is horrendous or offensive, it’s just completely void of any and all substance, as the instrumentation does nothing to stoke the imagination.  Guitarists Joseph King and Mohit Bhansali barely do riffs, let alone solos, and Sanjay Jain’s synthesizers add a sense of sleepiness — one of boredom as opposed to beauty — that do little to enhance the sound.  Almost all of the songs follow the same blueprint — verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus x 2 — and clock in around the four or five minute mark, making it impossible for the listener to differentiate one song from another.

It all seems like window dressing for King’s vocals.  One would imagine that with little else to offer in the way of a standout performance, King would be the diamond in the rough, but unfortunately he is just as insipid as his fellow deadbeats.  His delivery is raspy, and it becomes evident almost immediately — about halfway through the first track “Without A Trace” — that it is a bad idea for him to travel too far above his range.  Not that one would expect King to strain himself, but at least in this instance he is attempting to provide us with some variety.  Unfortunately, that is something that Wandering could use more of.

One will find that it’s impossible to say anything about an album like Weight of Wandering that says so little itself.  It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy, as Deadbeat Darling make music that wants to be arena-rock big, that longs to be sung to the heavens, but won’t be because of the strings that they have tied to themselves.  Their music is impersonal and objective, which will make them the perfect opening band to any number of commercial rock bands for years to come.  All the power to them, but it doesn’t quite work for this reviewer.
