Swallow Your Teeth, the debut full-length album from Richmond, VA’s The Catalyst, is a hellish hailstorm of unforgiving sonic attacks. Sometimes it’s hard to determine if the tracks are under-produced or over-produced; it’s that noisy. Even in the album’s slower, more melodic moments (rare events, indeed, but they do happen), everything seems simply saturated with distortion. This obsession just barely avoids drowning out the music. What bleeds through is an in-your-face collection of songs that lie somewhere between 90’s hardcore/acid punk and today’s brutal metal, at times very reminiscent of The Dillinger Escape Plan.

The Catalyst consists of only three members — Eric Smith (vocals/guitar), Michael Backus (bass/backing vocals) and Kevin Broderick (drums) — who play their hearts out as if the world were ending tomorrow. From the ominous opening track “I Hate the Future,” to the frantic finale “A Goodbye Kiss from The Catalyst (You Dog),” the trio tears through the listeners’ ears with the energy of multiple moshpits. The majority of Swallow Your Teeth pounds hard with heavy riffs and hectic rhythms, with random grooves and moments of stoner rock thrown in almost as interludes. In accordance with the music, Smith screams and growls through distortion; a nearly incomprehensive performance of lyrics that are surprisingly conscious of current events. “Too Big to Fail,” presumably about the recent financial crisis, is a prime example of Smith’s politically poetic lyrics: “panic of the mind/new illusionists revise their designs/frenzied eat their young; it’s nothing new/push the costs downwards until they crash back down on you.”

Though Swallow Your Teeth refers to a number of possible influences, the album is sonically tied together by a singular mood of angst and struggle. Most listeners would probably wish for a little more variety out of eleven songs. Any fan of loud and noisy music with a message, however, is bound to enjoy The Catalyst’s debut album for the well-executed, organized mess that it is.
